“Should my child be in nursery or kindergarten?” is one of the most common questions parents ask when they start looking at preschools in Singapore. The two words describe different stages of the early-years journey, defined mostly by a child’s age. This guide explains what each stage means, the ages involved, and how to decide which fits your child — using the way the stages work at Pegasus in Novena as a concrete example.
What Is Nursery in Singapore?
Nursery is the stage for younger preschoolers — broadly, children around three to four years old. It focuses on settling in, building independence and early communication, and learning to play and share alongside others, mostly through guided play and discovery. At Pegasus, Nursery covers two years, Nursery 1 and Nursery 2. (The earlier Smart Toddlers programme, from around 18 months, is a separate first step before Nursery.)
What Is Kindergarten in Singapore?
Kindergarten is the stage for the older preschool years — broadly, children around five to six years old — in the years before the move to Primary 1. Learning deepens: early literacy and numeracy become more purposeful, projects grow richer, and children take on more independence and collaboration. Nursery 1 and Nursery 2 at Pegasus
At Pegasus, the Nursery years are:
- Nursery 1 (age 3) — children strengthen independence, communication and early social skills through hands-on exploration and guided play, and begin to develop a keen interest in reading, letters and numbers.
- Nursery 2 (age 4) — children express their ideas more clearly and grow in self-confidence, deepening language, numeracy and creativity through inquiry projects and structured play.
Kindergarten 1 and Kindergarten 2 at Pegasus
The Kindergarten years build on Nursery:
- Kindergarten 1 (age 5) — children deepen early literacy, numeracy, creativity and collaboration through extensive discovery, integration and inquiry.
- Kindergarten 2 (age 6) — the final preschool year, building a strong foundation for primary school. A special Pre-Primary Preparation programme runs from July to December for children graduating to their next school.
How Learning Changes from Nursery to Kindergarten
The thread running through all four years is inquiry, play and real experiences — but the emphasis shifts as children grow. In Nursery, the focus is on settling in, curiosity and early skills. By Kindergarten, projects last longer, questions get deeper, and children take more ownership of their learning. Nothing is rushed; each stage is designed for where a child is developmentally, so the step up feels natural rather than sudden.
Language Development Across the Years
At Pegasus, three languages share one happy day — English as the main language of the classroom, with Mandarin and Japanese woven naturally through songs, stories, routines and play. In the Nursery years this builds early vocabulary and a natural ease with different languages; by the Kindergarten years it deepens into richer expression and confidence in each language, exactly when children absorb language most readily.
Independence, Social Skills and Confidence
Across Nursery and Kindergarten, children grow the qualities that matter far beyond academics: the confidence to try and to speak up, the communication to listen and share ideas, the independence for everyday self-help, and the social skills to play, take turns and make friends. These develop at each child’s own pace, through warm encouragement rather than pressure.
Preparing for Primary School
By the Kindergarten years, the focus gradually extends to a confident transition into Primary 1 — strengthening early literacy, mathematical thinking, independent learning habits, collaboration, and the emotional resilience to adapt to a new environment. The aim is not to make young children academic ahead of time, but to help them arrive at primary school curious, capable and ready to participate.
How Parents Can Decide Which Programme Fits Their Child
In most cases the starting point is simply your child’s age — a three-year-old generally begins in Nursery 1, a five-year-old in Kindergarten 1. Beyond that, it helps to think about your child’s confidence, interests and readiness, and to see the environment in person: how teachers speak with children, how the classroom is set up, and whether the day feels warm and purposeful.
